Im wunderbaren Chiang Mai in Thailand kann man generell toll vegan, vegetarisch und bio essen. Besonders aufgefallen ist uns das „Free Bird Cafe„. Es bietet frische vegetarische und vegane Bio-Küche verbunden mit einem guten Zweck. Mit den Einnahmen wird das Thai Freedom House finanziert, welches Sprach- und Kunstprogramme für burmesische Flüchtlinge finanziert.
An unserem letzten Tag in Chiang Mai gönnten wir uns ein leckeres Frühstück mit Smoothies und einem Chocolate-Chips-Kaffee.
Im integrierten, kleinen Laden kann man einerseits Second Hand Produkte (Kleider, Schmuck, Bücher, …) und andererseits biologische und meist fair-trade Kosmetikprodukte erwerben.
Das Free Bird Café befindet sich gleich ausserhalb des alten Stadtzentrums von Chiang Mai an einer (leider) stark befahrenen Strasse: 116, Maneenopparat Rd. Es ist geöffnet von Dienstag bis Samstag, 9:00 – 17:00 Uhr.
For my English speaking followers: Free Bird Cafe is an organic vegetarian and vegan charity cafe established for a love of healthy, whole, local & homemade food, coffee and smoothies and to support the work of Thai Freedom House; a language and arts community learning center for Indigenous Peoples and Burmese refugees. 100% of the profits from the cafe go to Thai Freedom House. I recommend the breakfast and the chocolate-chips-coffee! Lisa Nesser, Founder and Executive Director of Thai Freedom House, gave me the following answer to my question about their organic Food: „Yes, in Thailand it is very difficult to find absolutely everything organic, that is why we make all of our own sauces and jams, etc so that we know exactly what is in everything, we also work closely with our vendors and farmers to make sure that what we are getting doesn’t contain chemicals whenever necessary. In fact, we are one of the very few cafe’s that offers truly 100% organic coffee, the chocolate in that particular drink is not organic, but we do have an option on the menu to add 100% raw, vegan, organic cacao for an additional cost, because of course, it is very expensive for us to import such an item. There are also options for organic almond milk that can be substituted for regular cows milk if you so choose. We offer a lot of options so that everything on our vegetarian menu can be made vegan with small changes if the customer would like. There is no organic certification in Thailand, only a few supermarkets that use their own standards and labeling. That is why we are very dedicated to knowing the source of our Food“.
